How to break out of autopilot and create the life you want | Graham Weaver (Stanford GSB professor)
Lenny's Podcast episode, sponsored by Merge and Persona, in which Lenny Rachitsky talks with Graham Weaver, Stanford GSB's 2024 distinguished teaching award winner and founder-CEO of Alpine Investors, about breaking out of autopilot to build the life you actually want. Weaver says half his student meetings, at a business school, are really one question: what should I do with my life - usually a student weighing options A and B while their energy obviously belongs to B. His genie framework asks what you would pursue if a genie guaranteed it would turn out great, and his nine-lives exercise extends it. He describes autopilot as the unintentional day - commute, emails, dinner, sleep, repeat - and his law of the first move: everything you want is on the other side of worse first, because the first move is always negative, which is why plateaus hold people who will not accept a hard day, week or year. PARTIAL COVERAGE: this summary highlights the core exercises; accountability tactics and later discussion are not covered. These are Weaver's own frameworks and views, not independently verified, and nothing here is career advice.
